Results of the 2003 Brevard Squirrel Count
This year's composite of 26.0% white is the highest yet observed although it is not far from the seven-year average of 24.2% (ranging from 21.6% to 26.0%). While the number of squirrels observed dropped by 27% from last years record high, their abundance appears normal. Using other methods we have also estimated the squirrel density on the Brevard College campus to be over twice that of most of the rest of the study area. This abundance, coupled with a high percentage of the white variant (over 35%), make the Brevard College campus, with its park-like landscape, one of the best places for visitors to view their first white squirrel.
