In terms of abundance,
the maximum number of squirrels seen (594 on Count #3) was about average;
however, strip census on the Brevard College campus indicate densities
2-3 times higher than average there (3.4-4.4 squirrels/acre). In
terms of percent white, this year's composite of 25.4% white is the highest
yet although it is not far from the five-year average of 23.6% (ranging
from 21.6% to 25.4%). This year’s hot spot was the Brevard College
campus where over half of the squirrels observed were white. This
abundance of squirrels, in general, and of the white form, in particular,
combined with the park-like landscape make the Brevard College campus one
of the best places for visitors to view their first white squirrel.
