A second straight good acorn
crop resulted in a record number of squirrels being seen this Fall.
Despite large fluctuations in abundance, the percentage of white versus
gray squirrels in the study area has stayed remarkably constant.
This year's 23.1% white is almost exactly equal to the four year average
(ranging from 21.6 to 25.1). The downtown section south of the Post
Office once again was a hot spot with 48.5% white squirrels. This
year's highest percentage, however, was found on the Brevard College campus
where certain sections reported 3 out 4 squirrels being white. The
Count is not an actual census. It represents the percentage
of white versus gray forms seen on the mornings of the Count, an obvious
underestimate of the actual number out there. Using other methods
we have estimated the total squirrel population in the three square mile
study area to be over 2,500. Multiplying this number by the percentage
observed in the Fall Count, we estimate that approximately 600 of
these are white.
