1 Maps from the 1997-2001 Counts showing the actual geographic distribution of squirrels in each of the 35 Sectors are available online by clicking on "Distribution of Individuals within Sectors (White and Gray Squirrels)". They can also be accessed from the "Numerical Results by Sector" page by clicking on a specific count number for that Sector. We stopped posting them with the 2002 Annual Count. However, the actual maps on which observers recorded sightings (as well as the original datasheets) for all counts are archived in the Brevard College Library.
2 Beginning in Fall 2004 the protocol followed for the annual count was relaxed to accommodate student "volunteers." Rather than requiring that the count within all Sectors be carried out during a prescribed time period (8:00-10:00 a.m.), observers were assigned Sectors and allowed to make their observations at their convenience (within limits). It was reasoned that although this might effect the number of squirrels observed, there was no a priori reason to suspect it would effect percent white versus gray since, to our knowledge, there is no difference in foraging behavior between the two variants. Remember the function of the Annual Count is to estimate percent white; different methods are used to estimate abundance. If fewer squirrels were indeed observed, it might effect the reliability of the estimated percentages but the reliability of student observations on early Saturday mornings was already in question. Preliminary studies actually showed that more squirrels were observed in late morning and early afternoon (and even during the dreaded high noon hours) then the previous prescribed 8-10 a.m. period.
